Summary of Position

Under general supervision of Interpreter/Support Supervisor, to perform transliterating and/or interpreting for deaf and deaf-blind students and faculty using both expressive and receptive modes. Night and weekend work may be required; work assignment includes all District campuses and sites; location assignments other than District campuses and sites may be required.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Interpret for students in the classroom.
  2. Interpret for faculty and staff as needed for special events, meetings, workshops and off-campus activities.
  3. Interpret as a substitute or in team situations.
  4. Communicate in American Sign Language and English
  5. Assist with planning of professional development.
  6. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Experience and Education Guidelines

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  1. Associate of Arts in interpreter training program (two years).
  2. 1 year of college level interpreting experience.
  3. Must be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication modes used by Deaf persons, have demonstrated capability to successfully work with the Deaf students and the Deaf community.
  4. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college personnel, students and the community served by the college.
  5. Work successfully in a team environment.
  6. Observe the professional conduct code (RID).
  7. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  8. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications

  1. At the postsecondary level, at least three years of interpreting experience and working with Deaf students.
  2. Observe the professional conduct of code (RID) and confidentiality of information exchanged in interpreting situations.
  3. Skills to translate from spoken English into American Sign Language or signed English, and from sign language into spoken English.
  4. Knowledge of procedures, methods and techniques of interpreting for the deaf.
  5. Knowledge of special educational needs and services for the deaf and hard of hearing.
  6. Knowledge of cultural and social aspects of deafness and the deaf community.
  7. Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sign language.
  8. Knowledge of safe work practices.
  9. Ability to work in a standard classroom environment and to sustain repetitive motion of arms, wrists and hands for intervals of time; availability for evening and week-end work.
  10. A combination of experience and training equivalent to those prescribed for certification in sign language interpreting will be evaluated by an evaluator.

Salary

Maximum initial monthly salary placement will be placed on Step 1 ($4,083), Step 2 ($4,281) or Step 3 ($4,489) depending on education and experience. You will receive 5% step increases annually until you reach Step 6.
