English Language Institute (ELI) – Program Coordinator,

Summary of Position

The position is in the English Language Institute (ELI), which is administered by the Ohlone College Community Education / Entrepreneurial Ventures division. The incumbent reports directly to the Director, International Programs and Services and is responsible for management of the ELI.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the day-to-day operations of the English Language Institute (ELI);
  • Hiring, training, supervising and evaluating ELI instructors;
  • Devising and conducting instructional workshops;
  • ELI course creation and curriculum development;
  • Enhancing course and program curricula and services based upon instructor and student feedback;
  • Overseeing ELI placement testing for new and continuing students;
  • Scheduling classes and reserving classrooms;
  • Devising academic calendar and daily, weekly and term schedules;
  • Coordinating new ELI student orientations;
  • Coordinating End-of-Session graduation events;
  • Ordering textbooks, instructional materials, and classroom and office supplies;
  • Coordinating on and off-campus extra-curricular activities;
  • Hiring, supervising, training and evaluating ELI Student Assistants;
  • Serving as Designated School Official in relation to SEVIS, and managing all SEVIS-related program functions;
  • Working with the Ohlone College International Programs and Services office on the recruitment and admission of ELI students;
  • Teaching 5-10 hours per week of ELI community based, non-credit courses;
  • Advising ELI students regarding coursework, placements, acculturation and related matters;
  • Conducting community outreach to local-area companies to assess demand for on-site ESL instruction, and coordinate related follow-up ;
  • Exploring avenues for development of ancillary ELI-related events, activities and projects that support the goals of Ohlone College;
  • Representing the Ohlone College ELI at community outreach events;
  • Performing other duties related to the management of the ELI.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications

Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: M.A. in TESOL, Linguistics or related field preferred.

Experience: 3-5 years of ESL administrative experience preferred; Minimum 5 years of experience with different ESL levels and skills, preferably involving F-1 Student Visa-holding international students in the U.S; Experience living and/or working abroad, or extensive experience traveling abroad preferred; Experience with technology related to ESL.

Knowledge of: TESOL best practices in relation to classroom instruction, management, curriculum development and ELI / IEP program operation; Basic understanding or exposure to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations as they pertain to F-1 Student Visa-holders and intensive English Programs; Trends in TESOL / international education, including international student mobility.

Skills in: Hiring, supervising, training and fostering the professional development of English as a Second Language instructors; Collaborating with colleagues across institutional departments; Coordinating extra-curricular activities which enhance students learning experiences and facilitate their acculturation; Communicating with colleagues and students of diverse personal / professional backgrounds; Coordinating a fast-growing program in such way that contributes to the simultaneous growth of student enrollment and satisfaction; Using computer software and technology.

Abilities in: Teaching in a community based IEP/ELI program in the U.S. and/or abroad; Leading the growth of new programs; Fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous program improvement; Soliciting program satisfaction-related feedback from students, staff, and instructors, and making use of feedback to improve program operations; Develop and coordinate innovative curricula and courses in accordance with student needs; Monitoring a program budget and expenditures to ensure appropriate fiscal discipline; Classroom scheduling.

Salary

$78,000** Annually.
