Remote Access to Email - Information Technology Department

NOTE: You can access your Ohlone email account via Ohlone Webmail.

Windows Setup Netscape for email and calendar at home

Prerequisites:

  1. Netscape Communicator 4.x  with Calendar must be installed on your Windows OS computer. (http://home.netscape.com/download/selectplatform_1_703.html)
  2. The Calendar component must be installed.

Prescribed method of preparing Netscape for Ohlone mail.ohlone.cc.ca.us:

  1. Setup the profile with Ohlone user name
  2. Setup the Address book
  3. Set mail client
  4. Setup calendar
1. Setup The Profile With Your Ohlone user name
Windows 
Click - Start / path to: Programs / Netscape Communicator / Utilities /  User Profile Manager Windows Desktop screenshot
 
Click New Profile Manager Dialog Box
 
Click Next Creating A New Profile
 
Type in your full name (first name, space, last name) on the top line

Your Ohlone email address on the second line

Click next.

Enter Your Name & Email Address
 
Your profile name should be the same as your Ohlone user name (first initial followed by your last name). 

There is a second line showing the path to the mail file on your hard drive.
Click next.

Choose A Name & Directory For Your Profile
 
At "Outgoing SMTP server" text box type "mail.ohlone.cc.ca.us"

Click next.

 

Setup Your Outgoing Mail Server
 
At "Mail server user name:" text box, type your user account name.

At "Incoming Mail Server" text box, type "mail.ohlone.cc.ca.us"

Click Finish.

Set Up Your Incoming Mail Server
 
Open communicator and select your profile from the list

2. Setup Address book
 
Windows
Be sure you are connected to the internet 
(test by trying to browse the web).
Start Netscape
Netscape Communicator Icon
 
Click the Address Book icon
Address Book Icon
 Select File/New Directory
In the "Description:" text box, type "Ohlone College"

In the "LDAP Server:" text box, type "directory.ohlone.cc.ca.us"
 "Server Root:" type "o=Ohlone College, c=US"

 The other options can be left on the default choices.

Click OK.

3. Set Mail Client
 
 
Windows  
Start Netscape
Netscape Communicator Icon
 
Select menu Edit / select Preferences
Click the plus sign next to the "Mail & Newsgroups" to display the options available

Select "Identity" to display options available

Enter in  the "Your name:" text box,  your full name (first name, space, last 
  name).

Enter in the "Email address:" text box, your Ohlone email address (first 
  initial, last name with no spaces)

The "Reply-to address..." text box, should be left blank

Enter in the "Organization:" text box, your Ohlone College department of ...

The "Signature File:" section is optional. (This file will be located on your 
  hard disk.)

Preferences - Identity Dialog Box
        Browse or Choose the file on our local hard drive.
                 Note: The "Signature File" should be a text only file. 
      Do not create it in MS Word. 
      Use Notepad.
      Save the file with a name like "SigFile.txt".
      A good place the keep the file is in your  "My Documents" folder.
 
Select  & click "Mail Server" (located below the "Identity" heading)

In the "Incoming Mail Servers" text box,  "mail.ohlone.cc.ca.us" should be 
    entered
 If the box is empty select "Add"

 If the serve is listed, highlight it, and select "Edit"

Preferences - Mail Server
 
A box will pop up with a tab labeled general and POP
Click the "General" tab,

The "Server Name" should display "mail.ohlone.cc.ca.us" 

Check the "Server Type" which  should be POP

Check the "user name" which should list your regular user name (first initial, 
   last name with no spaces.)

The other options on this tab are a matter of preference

Mail Server Properties - General
 
On the POP tab,
  Check "'leave messages on server"' check box

  Click OK.

Mail Server Properties - POP
 
Select "Addressing"  (which is located below the "Newsgroups and Servers" heading)
Place a  check in both the "Address books" and the "Directory server" 
   check box

Select "Ohlone College" from the drop box.

Click OK.

Preferences - Addressing
 
Click OK to close the Preferences box.

4. Setup Calendar
 
Windows  
Start Netscape Communicator
Select Calendar
 
A pop-up box will appear  titled "Netscape 
   Calendar Sign-in".

In "User Name" type in your first name, space 
    and last name

In "password", type your email password.

In "Server Name" delete everything in the box, and type
    "calendar.ohlone.cc.ca.us"

Select OK.

Your college calendar agenda will be down loaded and displayed on your home computer.
