Handbook for Deaf Students - Interpreting and Accommodation Services, Disabled Students Programs and Services

Introduction

The Ohlone College Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office provides interpreting services for students, faculty and staff. It is the goal of the office to work cooperatively with all members of the campus community.

The guidelines in this handbook are to assist you when using an interpreter and the services of the Ohlone College Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office.

Guidelines for the Deaf Student

Interpreters in Your Classroom

Once you have met with your counselor and registered for your classes, an interpreter(s) will be assigned to each class. Once the interpreter(s) have been assigned, if you make any changes to your schedule, it is your responsibility to notify your counselor and Interpreting and Accommodation Services immediately. Failure to do so may result in delays in providing services.

First Day of Class

You must notify the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office if you will not attend class on the first day of the semester. If you do not notify Interpreting and Accommodation Services, the interpreter will be reassigned to another class.

If you arrive to class on the first day and the interpreter is not there, wait ten minutes. If there still is no interpreter, give your name to the instructor so you will not be dropped from the class, and go to the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office.

Dropping a Class

If you drop a class, you must notify the Interpreting and Accommodation Services office within twenty-four (24) hours.

Requesting a Notetaker

Because it is difficult to watch the interpreter and take notes at the same time, you may want to ask the instructor to ask the class for a volunteer to take notes for you at the beginning of the semester. An official request can be made through Interpreting and Accommodation Services. Special notetaker paper is provided for you in the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office.

Arriving Late

If you will be arriving late for class you should call the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office and leave a message. If you do not call, the interpreter will wait 10 minutes for a one-hour class, and 15 minutes for an 1 ½ class. After that, the interpreter will leave and may be assigned to substitute a class for that day.

Planned Absences

If you have an appointment or meeting and will miss class, you should advise the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office by email, phone, or leave a note in the office as soon as you know you will not be attending class.

Last Minute Absence

If you will be absent from class, you must let the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Office know immediately, even if you have already missed the class. If you miss three (3) classes during the semester without notifying the Interpreting Director, the interpreter will be removed after the third absence.

Removal of Interpreter

If you have missed three or more classes during the semester without notifying the Director of Interpreting and Accommodation Services, the interpreter(s) will be removed!

In order to get the interpreter(s) back in your class, you must:

  1. see your counselor
  2. notify the Director of Interpreting and Accommodation Services (after the meeting with the counselor) that you will be returning to your class.

If both things are done, then the interpreter(s) will be sent back to your class. After seeing your counselor and getting the interpreter(s) back, if you miss one more class without notifying the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Director, the interpreter(s) will be removed permanently for the rest of the semester.

Changing the Interpreter

If you are not satisfied with an interpreter and wish to have a new one placed in you class, you must:

  1. Tell the Director of Interpreting and Accommodation Services (in detail) why you are not satisfied with your interpreter.
  2. The Director will meet with and/or observe the interpreter in your class to see how they can improve.
  3. If no improvements have been made after the next few class meetings and you are still unsatisfied, the Director will assign a new interpreter to your class.

Handling Questions

Questions and comments for the teacher should be addressed directly to the teacher, not to the interpreter. The interpreter will voice your questions, then interpret the teacher’s answers. The interpreter will never answer the questions themselves.

Interpreters for Outside of Class

There may be times when you will need to request an interpreter for class events outside of the normal classroom or class time (field trips, teacher-student meetings, etc.). To request an interpreter, contact the Interpreting and Accommodation Services Director by email or in person at least one week before the event.

Mentoring

Ohlone College Interpreting and Accommodation Services has a wonderful mentorship program. This means a non-certified interpreter will learn skill-building techniques from a certified interpreter. So from time to time you may see another interpreter come to your class to watch and learn from your regular interpreter.

Deaf-Blind Students

After registering for your classes, make an appointment with the Interpreting Director to discuss additional needs.

Hard-of-Hearing and Late Deafened Students

Real-time Captioning services are available.

Guidelines for the Interpreter

The Role of the Interpreter

The interpreter will follow the R.I.D. Code of Ethics (Appendix A). The interpreter will arrive on time and wait for you outside the classroom. The interpreter is in the classroom to sign what is said and to speak what is signed during class time. The interpreter is not there as a tutor or teacher’s aide. If you are not paying attention in class or if you are late to class, the interpreter will not explain to you what you missed.

Sign Mode Preference

At the beginning of the semester, the interpreter will discuss with you your preference of signing (for example: ASL, PSE, SEE…). The interpreter will try to accommodate your preference.

Confidentiality

Interpreters shall keep all assignment-related information strictly confidential.

Interpret Everything

The interpreter will interpret everything that the teacher and students say during class time. The interpreter will also interpret everything you say to the teacher unless you tell the interpreter not to.

Clear Signing and Fingerspelling

The interpreter will sign and fingerspell everything to their best ability. If their signing or fingerspelling is not clear, you need to inform the Interpreting Director.

Interruptions

The interpreter should be able to keep up with the speaker. Sometimes, the interpreter may need to ask the speaker to repeat something. This should be done in a professional manner. If the interpreter interrupts the teacher too often you should inform the Interpreting Director.

Team Interpreting

Team Interpreting is used whenever possible. When working in a team, the interpreters are there to provide support and relief for each other. Both interpreters should attend the entire class session and be attentive to the needs of his/her partner at all times.

Appendix A

R.I.D. Code of Professional Conduct

  1. Interpreter/transliterators adhere to standards of confidential communication. (The interpreter will not talk to others about you, your classes, or your work.)
  2. Interpreter/transliterators possess the professional skills and knowledge required for the specific interpreting situation. (The interpreter will not interpret classes he/she is not ready for. The interpreter will interpret everything clearly and not include his/her opinion.)
  3. Interpreter/transliterators conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to the specific interpreting situation. (The interpreter will avoid actual or perceived conflicts of interest.)
  4. Interpreter/transliterators demonstrate respect for consumers. (The interpreter will honor consumer language preferences; facilitate communication access and equality; & approach the consumer with a professional manner at all times.)
  5. Interpreter/transliterators demonstrate respect for colleagues, interns, and students of the profession. (Interpreters are expected to work cooperatively with coworkers.)
  6. Interpreter/transliterators maintain ethical business practices. (The interpreter will be paid for his/her work.)
  7. Interpreter/transliterators engage in professional development. (The interpreter will go to workshops to improve their skill.)
