About the Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology
The Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology opened for classes on January 28, 2008. The eco-friendly campus is the first "green" community college campus in the nation. See also Green at the Ohlone College Newark Center.
The campus incorporates energy efficient features such as photovoltaic solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, and high-efficiency lighting. The interior areas include insulation made from recycled blue jeans, carpets made from recycled material, and furniture that is made from at least 65% recycled materials.
The landscape consists of native Bay Area low water consumption plants and grasses.
Programs and Courses
A variety of programs and courses are offered during the day, at night, and on the weekends to accommodate student scheduling needs.
Environmental and sustainability components have been implemented across the curriculum. Program offerings include Biotechnology; Environmental Studies; Physical Therapist Assistant; Registered Nursing; and Respiratory Therapist.
Several environmental active and collaborative learning projects are also a part of the student learning experience. Lab projects in Environmental Biology, Geography, GIS, and the emerging Environmental Studies program include restoring the nearby wetlands, working within the environmental outdoor lab, and learning about the renewable energy features that are part of the campus.
