Making the College Adjustment - Online Orientation

The Puente Project

The Puente Project is a transfer program. The mission of Puente is to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn college degrees, and return to the community to become mentors and leaders of future generations. The Puente Project consists of three components: English writing classes, Counseling, and Mentoring.

English Writing

Puente students take two consecutive writing classes, English 151B and English 101A, that focus on the exploration of the Mexican American/Latino experience through works written by Mexican American/Latino authors. Students work in small groups called "familias" to share their writing and provide feedback to one another.

Counseling

Puente students work closely with their counselors to develop academic plans and explore career options. Students enroll in two Personal Development (PD) courses, one in the fall and one in the spring. They visit four-year universities and attend an annual Puente Student Motivational Conference.

Mentoring

Each Puente student is matched with a mentor from the business and professional community. Mentors meet with Puente students to share their personal, academic and career experiences, and they serve as role models to the students.

Why join? Puente Students…

  • succeed academically;
  • are recognized as leaders and scholars;
  • graduate from four-year colleges and universities; and
  • belong to a statewide network of leaders and professionals.

What is the eligibility requirement to join Puente? Students must be eligible for English 151B. Puente takes in students in the fall only.
