Choosing Your Classes - Online Orientation
What Classes Should I Take My First Semester?
Because English and math classes are required for both an AA degree and transferring, it is recommended that students begin with English and math courses. Remember that English is made up of 2 subjects: writing and reading. Below are some recommendations for what courses to take your first semester:
- Writing course
- Math course
- Reading
If you are enrolled in all 3 of those classes, you may already be close to reaching the 12 unit, full-time status. If you still need more classes, here are some suggestions:
-
Personal Development classes: These classes teach you about study skills, time management, and other strategies for being successful in college. Additionally, students who take Personal Development classes are more successful in college!
-
General Education (GE) courses: Use the appropriate General Education pattern and select courses that interest you (see “Transferring to a Four-Year College” for General Education patterns). For math, science, and engineering students, it may not be advisable to complete a GE pattern. If you plan to major in any of those areas, talk with a counselor to discuss what courses are appropriate for you to take.
-
Major courses: If you know what your major is going to be, select introductory courses for that major.
