ESL Placement Test

Important Information for those who decide to take the ESL Placement Test:

  • You must complete an Ohlone College Admissions application and receive your Ohlone College student ID number before testing! Submit an online application.

  • Bring your Ohlone College student ID number. You will receive your student ID number by email after you submit your application.  If you have not received your student ID number, email the Admissions Office at admissions@ohlone.edu. You will not be allowed to take the test without an Ohlone College student ID number.

  • Bring a photo ID (driver’s license, California ID, green card, passport)

ESL Test Schedule and Reservations: Spring 2012

Important! Students must reserve their space for the ESL placement test in advance from this webpage. Please arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment.

Students can reserve only one ESL Placement Test per semester.

Placement Tests are taken on the Fremont campus at the Placement Testing Center, Room 7205 (Building 7, second floor) (Fremont Campus Map). Students are required to bring a current, valid photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, California ID, green card, passport) and their Ohlone College student ID number. No late students, no exceptions! Space is limited and reservations are made on a first come, first served basis.

ESL Placement Test Information

  • ESL placement tests includes an orientation: 3 hours for testing and 1 ½ hours for orientation.

  • The entire testing/orientation process will take approximately 4 ½ hours to complete. Students are expected to stay for the whole process.

  • The ESL placement test includes an essay on an assigned topic, a listening comprehension test, and a reading and grammar test. Review these sample questions (PDF) for the ESL. test

  • If you plan on also taking the math test, you will need to come at a separate scheduled time. Math Placement Test Schedules.

  • Testing is offered free of charge.

  • Counselors will be at the orientation to help students select their classes.

  • Please check the Admission Information in the current Class Schedule regarding documents that you should bring to verify your citizenship status and California residency status.

  • No study guides, calculators, dictionaries, or other study aids are allowed during the test.

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early for the tests.

  • Late students are NOT ADMITTED. Sorry, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

  • You are encouraged to bring food and drinks for the break.
