Placement Waivers - Placement Center

Two students at Newark campus.Students may not have to use the computerized Accuplacer placement tool if any of the following apply:

  • Have completed college-level English and/or math classes
  • Have graduated from a US high school within the last 5 years
  • Have Advanced Placement (AP) exam results in English and/or math
  • Have EAP/SBAC scores
  • Are not planning to earn a degree or take courses with English or math prerequisites

Waiver based on Completed College-Level Coursework

Completion of a college-level math or English course at an accredited college or university in the U.S. and received a grade of "C" or better.

  • Please see/visit a drop-in counselor
  • Bring a copy of your college transcript.
  • A counselor will evaluate your request and give you an English and/or math placement if appropriate.

Waiver based on Placement Results from California Community College

Ohlone College accepts English and math placement results from other California Community Colleges when possible, and results from the California Chemistry Diagnostic Test.

  • Please see/visit a drop-in counselor
  • Bring a copy of your placement results.
  • A counselor will evaluate your request and you will receive course placements if appropriate.

Waiver based on Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Results

Students may not need to use the Accuplacer computerized placement tool if they received a 3 or better on the appropriate English or math AP exam.

  • Please see/visit a drop-in counselor
  • Bring a copy of your original AP test results.
  • Counselor will evaluate your request and issue a placement waiver if appropriate.

Waiver based on CAASPP Early Assessment Program (EAP) results & Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC)

Ohlone College accepts qualifying CAASPP/EAP test results to clear students into English 101A and math courses with a prerequisite of Math 152.

Students can be cleared to enroll in English 101A, if they have one of the following:

  1. A CAASPP/EAP result of “Standard Exceeded”
    or
  2. A CAASPP/EAP result of “Standard Met” AND a high school transcript (unofficial is OK) verifying completion an ERWC (Expository Reading and Writing Course) in their senior year of high school with grades of C or higher in both semesters

Students can be cleared for Math 156, 159, 167, or 181 if they have a CAASPP/EAP test result of “Standard Exceeded”. Students who wish to enroll in higher level math courses (e.g. Math 188/Pre-Calculus or Math 101A/Calculus) will need to complete the Ohlone College computerized placement process.

CAASPP/EAP results are available for all applicable students. Please contact your high school for more information.

  • Bring a copy of your EAP results and a high school transcript (unofficial is acceptable).
  • Placement Center Staff will evaluate your request and issue a placement waiver if appropriate.

Waiver based on High School GPA and Completed Coursework

Recent high school graduates (from a US high school within the last 5 years) can use high school grades and courses to determine placement for English and Math.

  • Bring a copy of your high school transcript.
  • A counselor will evaluate your request and give you an English and/or math placement if appropriate.
