Please congratulate our March 2016 Meet Me at Ohlone recipient!
Director of Community Education / Workforce Development
She may be a “newbie” but she is not a newcomer to Ohlone College. Charmaine Do began at Ohlone as a high-school student and took Dr. Barnby’s biotechnology class, which sparked her interest in biotech. Charmaine completed her undergraduate education at UC Berkeley, where she received dual Bachelor’s Degrees in Public Health and Sociology. She continued her graduate studies at the University of Michigan, earning dual Master’s Degrees in Public Health and Social Work.
Employed at Ohlone a mere three months, Charmaine brings energy, enthusiasm and her upbeat personality to her role as Director of Community Education/Workforce Development. She is responsible for “Ohlone for Kids,” an after school and summer enrichment program that offers a blend of academic and special interest classes for kids and teens. In addition, she coordinates all not-for-credit community education classes, including informational and recreational enrichment courses for the community. “One of the most inspiring aspects of my role has been collaborating and reaching out to the community, beyond Fremont, for partnerships and growing the arms of Ohlone to be a mobile force for education in the greater community,” says Charmaine.
Wasting no time settling in, Charmaine has already made her voice heard…literally…by taking a singing class at Ohlone with Professor Holmes. Additionally, she is a mentor for international students, a member of the SOAR Committee, and a participant in the UMOJA initiative. “I really appreciate Ohlone for giving staff so many opportunities for involvement,” says Charmaine. “People don’t work in silos. Being able to help students, as well as getting to know other staff is really, really cool.”
Born in Hong Kong, Charmaine moved to the U.S. at two years of age and has since lived in Fremont. She went to American High School and hikes Mission Peak monthly. In fact, her husband asked her out on their first date at the top of Mission Peak!
At home, Charmaine focuses her attention on her seven-month old son, Alastor. A self- proclaimed “foodie,” she loves to discover new restaurants and post reviews on Yelp, earning her the status of a “Yelp Elite” member. Her two Papillon dogs, “Waffles” and “Truffles” are appropriately named! She attends midnight premieres for almost every superhero movie in theatres and has been an avid collector of “Hello Kitty” paraphernalia since childhood!
Charmaine Do may be a “newbie” to Ohlone, but she has certainly come full-circle! Stop by Building 4, Room 4203, to meet Charmaine and ask for any local restaurant recommendations!
