Meet Me At Ohlone - Where Employees Are An Essential Piece

Please congratulate our November 2016 Meet Me at Ohlone recipient!

Alex Lebedeff
Director of Purchasing, Contract Administration, Auxiliary Services and Hazardous Materials Compliance

Undoubtedly, the longest title at Ohlone must belong to Alex Lebedeff, Director of Purchasing, Contract Administration, Auxiliary Services and Hazardous Materials Compliance! Rightfully, since for almost the past five years, Alex has been responsible for overseeing a myriad of departments at Ohlone College. This includes the purchase of all materials and services needed by the College, as well as ensuring uninterrupted function of auxiliary services such as the bookstore, cafeteria, printing/duplicating, shipping/receiving, mailroom and facility rentals. In addition, Alex must ensure compliance with municipal, state and federal ordinances and regulatory agencies in terms of documentation on purchasing, storage, inventory, disposal and reporting of hazardous materials used by the College. “It’s a good indication if you don’t hear from me on this subject because it means everything has been done right,” says Alex.

Alex grew up in St. Petersburg Russia most of his life and came to the U.S. in 1993. Like all Russian boys in the 80s, Alex went through mandatory military service. He served in the elite Airborne Force and after his honorable discharge as a Sergeant; he was immediately recruited to join law enforcement. Alex majored in Administration of Justice and graduated from St. Petersburg Police Academy in 1991. He became a highway patrol officer and continued his education by taking courses to further hone his skills.

Prior to Ohlone, Alex was the Purchasing Manager at San Jose State University, where he began his career in 1999 in procurement as a Journey Level Buyer. He holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and continues his professional development by taking certification courses in purchasing management, risk management, procurement law and negotiations. He has taught courses at the CSU level in the fundamentals of purchasing and is active on numerous national and statewide committees and organizations. “I have been fortunate to come across mentors who were fair and believed that I could succeed,” reflects Alex. “They taught me the basic skills, guided me about the possibilities and helped me to reach my goals.”

Speaking of goals, it’s no surprise that the favorite part of his job at Ohlone, is volunteering at graduation. He enjoys the positive energy and believes that graduation is the culmination of all our hard work. “It’s like planting a seed that grows into a tree and bears fruit,” states Alex.

In his spare time, Alex enjoys the outdoors, traveling and cooking. In fact, he has cooked for his wife and two daughters every day since 1994! Yes….you read that right…every day for the past 22 years! A natural chef, he prepares a variety of international cuisine worthy of a five-star restaurant! Who would Alex choose if he could invite anyone who had ever lived to join his dinner table? That coveted seat would belong to Robin Williams, whose comedic movie, “The Birdcage,” is one of Alex’s favorites and continues to make him laugh even after repeatedly seeing it.

Be sure to stop by the Purchasing Department (FP-28) to meet Alex and ask him to show you the amazing photos of his delectable cuisine!
