Information Technology Services

He prefers ice cream over frozen yogurt, dogs over cats, and wine, not beer. If he could live anywhere, it would be Las Vegas. Meet Charles Outing, Systems and Network Technician for Information Technology Services at Ohlone College.

Though far from the bright lights of Vegas and non-stop entertainment, this Bay Area native has has found plenty to keep him busy with maintaining and updating servers, making sure the wireless internet is working, and troubleshooting voicemail and telephone issues for the college. Charles became interested in the technology field at a very young age. As a little boy he was always taking things apart to see how they would work. Charles turned his fascination with dismantling things into a passion for pursuing a career in technology.

Charles has a favorite quote that he lives by and applies to every aspect of his life. “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” He likes to share as much information and knowledge as possible, with his co-workers and others, so that they can be independent in solving problems.

A family oriented man, Charles takes great pride in having raised both of his children to stay focused and on the right path in life. He credits his grandmother and her influence on positively impacting his own life. Having raised Charles, she taught him about family values and how to cook. She always told him, “Whatever it is you decide to do, do it one hundred percent. Whether or not you failed, you can say you gave it your all.”

When Charles isn’t maintaining the servers and networks at the college, he likes to exercise. Charles runs laps around Lake Merritt for fun and has recently started running the trails along Lake Chabot. It’s no wonder this former track sport member, says his favorite superhero is the Flash.

If he’s not in his office, you can find Charles zipping around both campuses in a golf cart or on foot, on his way to answer another call for I.T. help!
