Tijan White
Student Success Coordinator

Tijan White.Spending the first eight years of his life in Harlem then moving to the beautiful beaches of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, Tijan White, Student Success CoordinatoratOhlone College, offers a contrast of perspectives and experiences rooted in an educational pathway.

Early In his life, Tljan's mother Instilled the value and power of education. As a child he was already well aware of the hardship, danger, and challenges of living in Harlem. Pursuing an education would create a trajectory in Tijan's life that would surpass dlfflcult circumstances and lead to success. An esteemed graduate ofTufts University (8.S. in Psychology) and Santa Clara University (Masters in Higher Education Administration), Tijan had his mind set on being a school psychologist. But his work at Columbia University with the college's Trio program led his heart to a career in advocating and providing support services for students.

He finds meaning in sharing his background as a way to relate to students and motivate them to consider committing themselves to a college education. Affecting an upcoming generation of young people and arming them with an optimistic outlook on life is a huge source of significance for him. Tljan said, “If you prepare yourself for the next opportunity, then you will be prepared to take advantage of it, when It comes.” Tijan is dedicated to connecting current students to the wide array of available support services. His mission Is to dispel stigmas associated with some support services and to get students plugged into the programs they need to succeed. He emphasizes that knowing what resources and support services are available is applicable to the real world. “We have to know what those services are, not be afraid to use them, and use them to achieve success,” Tijan said.

He has put the term “Oh lone Family” to the test as an employee for the past two years in the Student Services Division. Tijan was not sure if the phrase was a functional reality, but has since found it to be true. “The people I work with, my colleagues, truly care about me on a personal and professional level. Makes it a nice place to work when you care about the people you work with and the things that you do.”

He is most proud of being a husband to his beautiful wife and father to three adorable children. A lifelong athlete having played football and basketball in high school, Tijan also enjoys athletic activities like soccer and swimming.

What does the future hold for Tijan? He hasn't solidified his next goals, but would like to continue working in higher education and hopes to develop programs that will impact people on a larger scale. He is focused on enjoying every moment as he goes through each cycle of life and preparing for a better tomorrow.
