The Jackson Theatre is a 405 seat proscenium style theatre, set up for music as well as theatrical performance. The space is engineered to have variable acoustics to compliment the reverberation needed for orchestras and choirs to zero reverberation for standard theatrical presentations. It has a orchestra pit which can be mechanically raised and lower, doubling as a freight elevator to the storage below. It has a full fly system and a trapped floor. The proscenium is flanked by open box boom positions, and there are three catwalks over the audience. In an effort to increase the lobby space and add a focal point to the front of the building an art gallery was incorporated into the Smith Center building. The gallery is usually open during public performances, and the art displayed there is changed periodically. Visit the Louie-Meager Art Gallery website for contact information and the current Exhibit Schedule.

Amphitheatre

This is an open air theatre that backs up to the main building and the Lam Plaza. With an expansive view of the bay, a concrete stage measuring 50 feet by 80 feet has a sunken orchestra pit. The raked seating area has grass levels. The college now owns a winched truss system for on-stage lighting needs. The lighting circuits are controlled from a side balcony with its own dedicated ETC board. There are 200 circuits throughout the outdoor space including the plaza.

Lam Plaza

This open air plaza is named after LAM, INC. for their generous donation to the arts. The plaza extends from the box office to the outdoor amphitheatre and has been the site for several outdoor gatherings.

The Box Office is located on the Lam Plaza directly outside of the main entrance to the theatres. Visit the Smith Center Box Office page for ticket information.

Alicia Marsella Green Room

Alicia Marsella Green Room is named after our long time supporter, actress-at- large, and current President of the Theatre Patrons Association. The Green Room is the waiting room for performers to relax prior to going on stage. With a fully equipped kitchen for quick snacks and the occasional party, the Green Room has also become a campus wide gathering space.

Norman H. Kirschbaum Costume Shop

Norman H. Kirschbaum Costume Shop is named for our long time friend of the department and community, Norman H. Kirschbaum. Norman worked out of regular classrooms, attics, and closets for the 17 years in his role as Theatre Director, costume designer and director. This room is an expansive light filled well equipped space. There are separate spaces for laundry, wigmaking, a painting and dying room, and costumer's office. We would like to thank Barbara Cox for her valuable input on the design of this space.

The Scene Shop

The Scene Shop is truly a state-of-the-art carpenter's dream. With winched paint frame, compressed air, welding facilities, separate shop office space, and an open work floor almost the size of the old Studio 22, the shop has everything. Other equipment includes a wooden floor, skylights, electric hoist and track system, vented spray paint booth and sawdust vacuum system. Overlooking the shop is the second floor design room with ten drafting tables a blue print machine, and light table. The shop is modeled after the UCLA scenic shop.
