What is University Express?
University Express is a unique and exciting program for students interested in transferring to a 4-year college or university after attending Ohlone. There are currently three University Express (UE) groups. Each UE Group has thirty students enrolled together in four courses (see Cohorts and Classes). Three courses meet specific General Education or basic skills requirements necessary for transferring to most 4-year colleges, including the UCs and CSUs. * One course is specifically designed to help students be successful in college and establish their transfer plans. Students are also encouraged (but not required) to enroll in a fifth course, mathematics, based on their specific math placement test results.
Because these courses are required for transfer, they fill up quickly and many new students are therefore unable to enroll in them during their first semester. Students who participate in University Express are guaranteed admission into these classes.
The majority of students who drop out of college do so during their first semester. They are often overwhelmed with the freedom and responsibility associated with college. Even students who earned straight As in high school may find they are unable to keep up with the academic rigor of college. Students in University Express will have a support network of peers and faculty who will assist them in the transition to college and teach them the skills they need to be successful.
* Some private and out-of-state colleges may have different transfer requirements. Additionally, University Express may not be appropriate for certain majors, such as engineering, biological science, and business. Speak with an Ohlone Counselor to determine if University Express is right for your educational goals.
