Using FileZilla for Windows - Web Center

The instructions and screenshots below are for MS Windows computers. At this time, a Using FileZilla for Mac tutorial is not available, but the basic steps are explained and you may be able to follow along.

Using FileZilla, authorized users can access the Ohlone College development web server from any location where FileZilla is installed.

The FileZilla file transfer program provides:

  • Protection for all passwords and data
  • Fully integrated secure file transfer and file copying
  • A windows graphical user interface

If you are not currently an authorized user, see How Do I Get a Web Server Account? If you are an authorized user but do not have the client software installed, contact Information Services Help Desk. If you wish to install the client at home, see Download and Install FileZilla for Windows and Mac.

Login Information

  • Host Name: dev2.ohlone.edu
  • Username: Your username
  • Password: Your network password
  • Port: 22
  • Authentication Method (if available): Keyboard Interactive

Launching FileZilla

Launch FileZilla using one of these methods:

  • Select the "FileZilla Client" icon on the desktop (see Figure 1a):

  • Select the Start button in the Windows Taskbar, then select Programs > FileZilla FTP Client> FileZilla from the menu as shown in Figure 1b.

Turn Off the Display of the Local and Remote Directory Trees

When FileZilla opens (see Figure 3), make the program easier to use (with less to look at!) by turning off a few extra sections as follows. FileZilla will remember you turned off those items and won't display them again unless you turn them back on. See Figure 2.

  • View > Local directory tree (removes the checkbox next to this menu option)
  • View > Remote directory tree (removes the checkbox next to this menu option)
  • View > Message log (removes the checkbox next to this menu option)

Connecting to the Web Server

When ready to connect to the web server, fill in these Host, Username, Password, and Port fields as follows (see Figure 4):

  • Host: dev2.ohlone.edu
  • Username: your username
  • Password: your password
  • Port Number: 22

Then press Enter to start the login process.

For the first connect session with the dev2.ohlone.edu server (and after the server software has been updated), you will see an "Unknown host key" screen similar to the one shown in Figure 5.

  • Select the checkbox for "Always trust this host, add this key to the cache"
  • Click "OK" to accept the settings and save them.

You are now logged into the development web server.

Transferring Files to/from the Web Server

Once you have logged in, you should see a two pane display (see Figure 6):

  • The pane on the left shows local files on your computer and on any network drive accessible to you on your computer
  • The pane on the right shows remote files on the web server. The remote directory displayed is the website directory for the account. For example:
    • A personal account has a directory such as /people/jsmith
    • A departmental account has a directory such as /org/athletics
  • The drop-down box on the right side (highlighted in red in Figure 6) shows the current directory

You can transfer files between your computer and the web server in several ways. Begin by navigating in the left pane to the directory in which your website files are stored on your computer. Select the website files that you want to transfer to the server. You may then:

  • drag and drop
  • copy and paste from the Edit menu
  • upload/download from the Operation menu

Disconnecting

When you are finished transferring files, you should disconnect from the web server by clicking on the disconnect icon (black Q button circled in red in Figure 7). This will help to protect the integrity of your files.
