Web Task Force (WTF) - Agenda

Meeting: Monday, May 10, 2004, 2:00pm-4:00pm

(will be updated after meeting to reflect additional topics of discussion)

Topics of Discussion

  • Comments about the summary of our last meeting from October 2003. PLEASE REVIEW BEFORE OUR MEETING. If you CANNOT be at Monday's meeting, please REVIEW THE NOTES AND SEND COMMENTS TO webteam@ohlone.edu PRIOR TO 1:00pm Monday. THANK YOU!

  • Discuss whether to pursue redesigning the website - and review a sample new home page design (a screenshot is temporarily posted).

    The goals were to:

    • make the header smaller
    • add multiple pictorial views of the college
    • provide room for additional important-for-students links
    • make links more noticeable (the second level of main navigation for the current design isn't very visible)
    • shorten and make less visually cluttered and boxy the events/campus news/etc. information (which also makes it more accessible without all the tables and tables cells making up the current home page content)

[While I like the simplicity of the design, I'm not yet satisfied with the center content area.]

What works with the current design? What doesn't work?

What features does the College website need on the home page? on core pages? on division pages? on academic department pages? on administrative department pages?

Web browsing with PDAs, laptops, cell phones, etc. is more prevalent. Is it time to address that with the College website? (At least for Web Team-managed websites.)

  • Status of:

    • websites managed by the Web Team.
    • all academic departments having an informative website with information that "sells" their programs.
    • a new Human Resources/Payroll website.
    • a new Business Services Division website and websites for departments in that division.

  • Discuss faculty websites stored on "online.ohlone.edu" web server. What is the criteria for deciding whether someone can store their website there vs. on the dev2/www2 servers? Decide whether or not to pursue creating a "www3.ohlone.edu" subdomain where faculty can publish" live" rather than going through the Web Team. What is the criteria for being able to publish directly?

  • Status of compliance with Web Style Guidelines - Implementation Timeline deadlines have not been met. Review Implementation Timeline at http://www.ohlone.edu/org/webstyleguide/timeline.html. Not all divisions have websites. Not all academic departments have websites. Some academic departments still don't meet logo/footer requirements. Review for accessibility features has not yet been done. Almost none of them use web standards, have validated (X)HTML pages, use style sheets.

  • Whatever else comes up that there is time for…
