Web Team Newsletter - December 12, 2002 (Volume 1.1)
Happy Holidays! Welcome to the Web Team's first periodic newsletter for Ohlone College employees. In the newsletter, we'll announce workshops, new information and tutorials available in the Web Center, reminders about Web Style Guide requirements, and provide tidbits of information you may find helpful.
In this issue:
- Announcing the ohlone.edu Domain Name
- Web Style Guide Implementation Deadline for Phase I: End of January 2003
- Future Web Team Workshops
- 2-Day Dreamweaver MX Courses Offered at Ohlone
- Web Team-Managed Websites
- Web Center Tidbits
Yes, that's right, ohlone.edu! Our website and email addresses can now use ohlone.edu instead of ohlone.cc.ca.us. The IS Department will maintain both domain names for the next year or so.
A. Website Address
The ohlone.edu domain name also works as our website address! For example, the following are all valid website addresses for websites on various Ohlone College web servers:
During the break before the Spring 2003 semester begins, the Web Team will change to ohlone.edu on the websites we manage.
Although both ohlone.edu and ohlone.cc.ca.us will be valid for the next year or so, you may want to switch your websites to ohlone.edu in the next few months so information provided by all Ohlone College websites is consistent.
B. Email Addresses
The IS Department has configured the email server so that both ohlone.edu and ohlone.cc.ca.us will work for incoming email. This means you can now receive email messages addressed to your email username at the ohlone.edu or ohlone.cc.ca.us domain names. As time allows, desktop support personnel in the IS Department will visit each campus computer to setup the email program to send email using the ohlone.edu domain name as the "from" address. Please contact the Helpdesk (http://help.ohlone.edu) with questions.
Please note that the Web Team's email username is not valid using ohlone.edu. The IS Department is looking into this problem.
As stated in the Implementation Timeline for the Web Style Guide, all Academic Divisions must have a website meeting the requirements of the Web Style Guide by the end of January 2003. More information is available at the following links:

The deadline for meeting Phase II requirements is May 2003.
If you have questions about the requirements, please contact the Web Team. For information about the Web Team managing your Division or Department website, refer to #5 in this newsletter.
Website accessibility is a hot topic! We are bound by state law to meet Section 508 (http://www.section508.gov/) guidelines for website accessibility. The Web Style Guide states that all websites on the Ohlone College domain must meet accessibility guidelines by the end of January 2004 (yes, that is over a year away, but don't wait!).
The Web Team will be providing workshops about making websites accessible to people with disabilities. Dreamweaver MX makes it easier to use correct XHTML or HTML markup to make web pages accessible.
Information about Web Accessibility is available in the Web Center at http://www.ohlone.edu/org/webcenter/accessibility.html and in the Web Style Guide at http://www.ohlone.edu/org/webstyleguide/accessibility.html.
The Multimedia Department has scheduled two 2-Saturday 0.5-unit courses for using Dreamweaver MX (MM107-Introduction to Dreamweaver and MM210D-Selective Topic: Designing Accessible Websites). For more information: http://www.ohlone.edu/org/webcenter/mmclasses_dwmx.html.
The Web Team is available to manage Division or Department websites. We will convert the content for your Division or Department website to the standard design templates and be responsible for updating the site with content you provide. Additional information is available at: http://www.ohlone.edu/org/webcenter/faqs_webteam.html.
The Web Team's client list and conversion timeline/waiting list are available on the Web Team website at http://www.ohlone.edu/org/webteam/clientlist.html.
Deans should contact us to discuss this option for your Division or Department websites.
Got Questions? Suggestions Welcome!
The Web Team is proud of the progress we've made to date with the redesign and reorganization of the Ohlone College website. We seek your comments and suggestions for improvement.
