Biography
Jennifer Jovel grew up in Fremont, California. Her parents came to the U.S. from El Salvador, and she was the first in her family to go to college.
She graduated from Kennedy High School where she was not that good of a student. She had no idea that she would even go to college until she started attending Ohlone.
After Ohlone, she transferred to U.C. Berkeley where she studied Social Welfare and Chicana/o Studies.
She realized that she loved learning about and working with community college students, so she got a master’s degree in Counseling from San Jose State, a second master’s degree in Sociology from Stanford, and a Ph.D. in the Sociology of Education from Stanford.
Throughout her education, she studied how to help underrepresented students in community college transfer to four-year universities. She considers Ohlone to be her favorite school of all time and loves working with the students here. She teaches Sociology and Chicana/o Studies, and likes exploring race, class, and gender issues. Jennifer still lives in Fremont with her husband and new baby. In her free time, she likes to go to the beach, travel, listen to old school hip-hop, and spend time with her friends and family.
