Kim Stiles, Professor - Registered Nursing Department

I envision a world where everyone shares good health, an earth whose inhabitants do more than survive, but actually thrive. What is the nurse's role in creating such a future? This is my quest.

Clinical Experience

Kim started her nursing career as a medical-surgical nurse in a rural teaching hospital in upstate New York. Over a seven year period she advanced up the hospital's clinical ladder program to assistant nurse manager, while continuing to provide direct patient care. As part of a visionary team, her proudest accomplishment was helping her unit to transition to shared governance. Often holding leadership roles, Kim participated in multiple hospital committees including ethics, professional practice, and nurse recruitment and retention. In response to a need to improve communication between nurses on different units, she created and edited a monthly nursing division newsletter.

After completing a Certificate Program in Holistic Nursing, Kim decided to pursue her Master's Degree in advanced practice holistic nursing. Her nursing experience became much more community focused in her new role as a resident hall director for senior undergraduate students, international students, and graduate students. As a graduate student, Kim learned a variety of complementary therapies including aromatherapy, therapeutic touch, homeopathy, guided imagery, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. She taught classes in holistic nursing theory, aromatherapy, and guided imagery to medical, nursing, and massage students during her practicum at the New Center for Wholistic Education and Research on Long Island.

Kim moved to California in 1999 to pursue her doctoral studies in San Francisco. She returned to hospital nursing in a small community hospital and became a critical care nurse. She worked briefly at a large tertiary care hospital to advance her expertise in cardiac critical care nursing before joining Ohlone College full time in 2004.

Professional Activities

Kim has been a member of the American Holistic Nurses' Association (AHNA) since 1995, and is certified as an advanced holistic nurse (AHN-BC). She helped to develop advanced practice standards for holistic nursing, served as a board member for the American Holistic Nurses Certification Corporation, and is a member of the AHNA research committee.

In nursing education, Kim has served as a National League for Nursing Ambassador, and is a certified nurse educator (CNE).

Kim is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, honor society for nursing, and is currently coordinating a qualitative research study on the topic of nurse interprofessional leadership with funding from the Nu Xi At Large chapter.
