LEED Green Building Rating System
- The Ohlone Community College District identified sustainable design as an important and integral part of design goals for the Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology project.
- The Ohlone College design team was directed to incorporate "green" measures into the building's design, with the goals of reducing the buildings impact on the environment and providing opportunities for students and other building users to learn about environmental issues and sustainable design technologies.
Therefore, the design team used the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System Version 2.1 to measure the sustainability of the project. LEED is a self assessing system designed for rating new and remodeled commercial, institutional, and high-rise residential buildings. It is a feature-oriented system where credits are earned for satisfying each criterion.
