In the United States, a person dies by suicide nearly every 14 minutes, claiming more than 38,000 lives each year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students, and the third for youth ages 15-24, with adolescent depression -undiagnosed, untreated or both- as the number one cause.

  • 2.3% of Ohlone students have attempted suicide

  • Over 12% of Ohlone students received a lower grade on exam, lower grade in course or dropped a course due to depression

  • 25% of students have received mental health services from a mental health counselor

  • 8% of Ohlone students were diagnosed within the previous 12 months with depression

  • 21% of Ohlone students have considered suicide, 5.5% within the previous 12 months

The Out of the Darkness Walks are 3-5 mile walks taking place in communities across the country, with the proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). By walking in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you will be walking with thousands of students nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide and provide support for survivors of suicide loss. In deciding to walk, you are taking us a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority.

Register now! to get started. Once you have registered you will have your own personal fundraising page to help you with your fundraising efforts as well as watch your progress!

Thank you for your participation and support!

Volunteers are needed to help monitor the route, register walkers, assist with the snack table and parking, and tear down.

We thank you for your efforts to raise funds to bring education, research and survivor programs to communities across the country and to break the silence surrounding depression and suicide.

Sponsored by AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention), the Ohlone College Student Health Center and ASOC. This is such a worthy organization that has chapters all over the United States that do education for prevention, intervention for those considering suicide and supporting survivors. Most of the volunteers for the organization have lost someone to suicide.

If you can't participate by walking, please consider volunteering to help at the event by registering and then signing up as a volunteer or placing a donation.
