Fremont, Calif., September 24, 2019—The Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) Department at Ohlone College is celebrating 50 years of dedicated service in helping students reach their academic and life goals. The EOPS 50th Birthday Celebration will be held this Friday, September 27 at the Smith Center on the Ohlone College Fremont Campus at 43600 Mission Boulevard.
“This event is to highlight the EOPS program, and to celebrate current students and alumni who have come through Ohlone College and have left with a greater sense of self through transferring to a four-year college, gaining career skills, and a heightened sense of belonging and self-esteem,” says Interim Director EOPS & College Ombudsperson Nancy Navarro.
The EOPS program, established in 1969 by Senate Bill 164, was created in order to serve students facing various challenges including but not limited to socioeconomic status and language ability. At Ohlone, EOPS ensures that all students are given equal opportunity for academic success by providing comprehensive support services like academic advising, financial assistance, early registration opportunities, transfer services, scholarships, and mentorships.
“So many amazing students have come in to our offices and in to our lives—students who didn’t believe in themselves or who just didn’t have the ability to help themselves due to lack of resources,” says Sandy Bennett, EOPS coordinator. “Those are the people who motivate me each and every day as I see them transform in to more.”
While the EOPS program is certainly the framework by which students receive resources and support, much of the impact comes from the EOPS staff who work to build bridges of connection and understanding with their students.
“It’s not just about supplying students with the information they need to succeed,” adds Navarro. “It’s also about giving them a place to turn to when they’re unsure and to show them they have people who truly care, people who believe in them. In providing services and resources to our students we also strive to guide them in becoming resourceful beyond EOPS.”
