Ohlone College regrets to announce the passing of a pioneering and dedicated faculty member, J. Atwell “Budd” Scruggs III, who passed away on Oct. 30.

He was a member of the English Department from 1970 until his retirement in 1999, at which time he was granted the title Professor Emeritus of English. He served the college with distinction in his teaching and leadership. Among his achievements, he developed many materials for the Writing Lab and Reading Lab (later to merge and become the English Learning Center). He was a pioneer in the development of the ESL program.

Professor Scruggs was the creator and instructor of the English Department’s highly regarded and popular course, World Mythology. In that class in particular, he prompted many students to develop their own love for literature. Always holding himself and his students to high standards, he pursued his work at Ohlone College with enthusiasm and with the knowledge that teaching was his true vocation.

He remained curious about changes at Ohlone after his retirement, deeply interested in how things were going at the place he considered a second home. Professor Scruggs will be profoundly missed.
