I want to start this message off by saying thank you to our students, faculty, and staff for all of your patience during this very stressful and uncertain time. I realize that this has not been an easy time for anyone, and I want you to know that I am with you, College leadership is with you, and we have been working tirelessly to make the best decisions for the College regarding the potential impact of COVID-19 on our beloved community.
While it has certainly been an unusually difficult time, it’s also been a time where I’ve seen the College come together as students, faculty, and staff members unite to find solutions to the unknown and unfamiliar. The College has created an Incident Command Team (ICT) and is working with faculty and staff to get as many of our face-to-face classes ready for remote instruction as soon as possible and no later than March 30th.
The ICT is working on getting answers to unknowns, one of which is classes that cannot be converted to a remote instructional format. We realize the sense of urgency that the community is feeling and will provide updates and guidance as we can.
Classes: All face-to-face instruction is suspended from March 13th through March 29th. Classes that are transferring to online format may begin using that format on or before March 30th. Students will be contacted by their instructors as to the status of each of their courses and how to navigate the online coursework. Courses that are already taught online remain open.
Campus Operations: Both the Fremont Campus and Newark Center remain open for facility use, and our staff is still working to provide all of the services we make available as a college.
Additional Cleaning: The health and well-being of our community is always at the forefront of our minds and we are making every effort to keep our facilities sanitized with extra measures to reduce the likelihood of any transmission. The College facilities staff have been employing extra antiviral deep-cleaning procedures in high traffic and high touch areas, have placed hand-sanitizers all across the Fremont Campus and Newark Center, and are using extra diligence in their cleaning procedures during this critical time.
Events and Athletics: We realize that there may be questions regarding events on campus. The ICT has a dedicated team that is looking at what events are on our calendar and which should be canceled or postponed, or will not be impacted. The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) has decided to suspend all sporting events for the season.
Communication to Students: Students are urged to check their email and the website regularly for the latest updates.
E-mail and Phone Number for Questions: In addition to regular email updates, we are working to establish an email address and a dedicated phone hotline for anyone with specific questions or inquiries. We will post this information once it has been completed.
COVID-19 Website: The College has created a website for information and updates surrounding COVID-19 as it relates to Ohlone College. We will post updates and important information on this site. Please refer to https://www.ohlone.edu/information-corona-virus.
The situation with COVID-19 is ever changing and we are as anxious as you are in getting through this tumultuous time. We ask that you continue taking care of yourselves and your loved ones, and try to stay calm and positive. Let’s all make extra efforts in being kind to one another as one family and take precautionary measures to remain healthy by washing hands, using hand sanitizer, staying home if you are sick, and avoiding large gatherings.
