Fremont, CA-Discover the secret influential tactics of con artists, quacks, psychics, and the power of phantom dreams. Based on his extensive research on the social-psychological drives used by con artists, Dr. Anthony Pratkanis discusses the psychology of influence and how to protect ourselves from fraud. His lecture includes commonly used tactics, the reason people fall prey to them, and how we can learn to recognize "flimflam" to protect ourselves from weapons of fraud used as means of persuasion. An expert on marketing and consumer behavior, Dr. Pratkanis says "Propaganda works best when we are half mindless, simplistic thinkers trying to rationalize our behavior and beliefs to ourselves and others".
Dr. Anthony Pratkanis earned his Ph. D. from the renowned social psychology program at Ohio State University and is a popular Professor of Psychology at University of California Santa Cruz. He is the founding editor of the scientific journal Social Influence and co-author of Age of Propaganda: The Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion and Weapons of Fraud: A Source Book for Fraud Fighters. He currently works with AARP and civic groups and has recently testified in front of the US Senate on preventing economic fraud crimes as well as countering propaganda of terrorists and dictators. He has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, NBC, in the New York Times and many other media outlets. His research was recently featured on (and censored by) the Discovery Channel.
