Fremont, CA -- Seven hundred seventy one Associate degrees are being awarded tonight at Ohlone College's 45th Graduation Ceremony, honoring students for their commitment to hard work and achievement. This marks Ohlone's largest graduating class ever, almost 330 more students than last year.
In an era that has been notable for budget cuts and class reductions, this is evidence of students' commitment to completing their education and moving forward better equipped for today's economy.
This year, Ohlone College anticipates awarding 109 Associate of Science degrees and 662 Associate of Arts degrees, including 127 multiple degrees to the 771 outstanding graduates at the ceremony. The youngest graduate is 17 years old, and the oldest is 64 years old. 389 of the graduates are Fremont residents, 66 from Newark, and the remaining are from other parts of the bay area with some distance learners from as far as Colorado, Indiana, and Hawaii.
The 2012 Valedictorian Mei-Xin (Tracy) Yang came to Ohlone in 2009 after graduating from James Logan High School. Originally from Canton, China she now lives with her mother in Union City. While balancing work, school, and caring for her mother, she has completed 89 units at Ohlone with an outstanding GPA 4.0. Mei-Xin's motivation for excellence is fueled by her goal to provide a secure future for her hardworking mother. She will graduate Ohlone College with two Associates in Arts degrees, one in Business and the other Human Development Studies. She will pursue a degree in Business Administration from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.
