Ohlone Students and the Community Come Together to Save Summer Production Cancelled by Budget Cuts

Summerfest 2012Smith Center Presents: Broadway Mashup.

Fremont, CA-Summerfest is back, restoring the almost 40-year-old tradition of summer musical theater that fell victim to state budget cuts in 2010. As a direct result of fundraising efforts and the combined dedication of Ohlone students, alumni, community members, staff, and volunteers, the old girl is alive again and she has her dancing shoes on! According to Fred Alim, Director of this year's production, "the community is really into it" so they just had to bring Summerfest back.

Broadway Mashup: Putting It Together, this year's Summerfest production, blends favorite Broadway classics presented under the stars at the Smith Center Amphitheatre at Ohlone College. The live performance incorporates a mashup of vignettes from Broadway classic and contemporary musicals such as West Side Story, Don Quixote, Miss Saigon, Avenue Q, Wicked, and more. The event is not only a fundraiser, but also an awareness-raiser to show the community the value of Summerfest, and the benefit of carrying on the tradition of the summer production.

With virtually no budget, over 75 Ohlone students, alumni, community members, and staff came together, working and rehearsing tirelessly to ensure the public gets the same quality of entertainment that they have enjoyed in the past. Everyone from professional performers to first-timers, costume dressers to stage crew, are working overtime to get all the details ready, even building puppets with the help of a former professional puppeteer!

The majority of the production showcases song and dance performances, such as fun bits from Avenue Q or a very dramatic segment from Miss Saigon. According to Alim, the production includes seasoned numbers as well as carefully chosen new Broadway delights to surprise the audience. Broadway Mashup presents songs in a "mashup" format similar to Glee or Smash, but you get to see it performed live, by local talent.

Be sure to buy your tickets before they sell out. You won't want the curtain to close! (p.s. It's performed outside under the stars, so there really is no curtain-just the blanket of the nighttime!! Can't wait to see you there!)
