Fremont, CA-The Ohlone College Men's and Women's Basketball teams finished up their season with a special fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, Coaches vs. Cancer at the Epler gymnasium on the Ohlone College Fremont campus. Fans donated over $820 to the cause while cheering both teams on to victory over the visiting teams.
"The event was a complete success", said Chris Warden, Athletic Director. "The energy in the gym that day was palpable. It began with a great live rendition of the National Anthem from our very own Ohlone Saxophone ensemble, honoring our Ohlone Sophomore Athletes, recognizing our Ohlone Board of Trustees, and supporting the fight against Cancer." He finished with, "I'm very much looking forward to continuing this tradition for years to come."
There was a half time three-point shoot-out between the women's Coach Julia Allender and the Men's Assistant coach Scott Clark. Clark, a top three point shooter for Coach Peterson in 2009-2010, could not match the hot shooting Allender. The loser ran suicide drills.
The Ohlone Board of Trustees, and College President Dr. Gari Browning, were present for both games, with the exception of Trustee Watters. They spent time with the teams and talking with the crowd and cheering on the Renegades.
The men beat Canada 80-53 under the leadership of Coach John "JP" Peterson. Coach Julia Allender started all of her sophomores and easily handled Hartnel, 78-49.
The men are seeded No. 7 and will take on Yuba College in their first playoff game. The Lady Renegades wrapped up the No. 6 seed and will host the No. 11 seed Modesto Junior College in playoffs.
