What Is the Counseling Department?
The Counseling Department offers students personal counseling, academic and career planning, and can assist students with transfer goals. Counselors are available virtually to help support students obtain their education goals. For more information visit our Counseling Department homepage.
Who Can Speak With a Counselor?
Any currently enrolled Ohlone student can speak with a counselor. Students who wish to speak with a counselor must have an Ohlone student ID. You can get an Ohlone student ID by submitting an application.
How To Speak With a Counselor?
Here on the Counseling Department website, students can call or email to schedule an appointment. Students can also attend drop in appointments. Students who wish to speak with a counselor must have an Ohlone student ID. You can get an Ohlone student ID by submitting an application.
What Types of Counseling Appointments?
There are several different types of counseling appointments available.
Phone: Students can call to schedule an appointment with a counselor and speak with them over the phone.
Email: Students can email counselors with questions.
Virtual: Students can have a live chat with a counselor.
Drop-in: Students can attend a shorter (15 minute) drop-in appointment with a counselor to answer shorter or less involved questions.
How Often Should I Speak With a Counselor?
Students should speak with a counselor at least once per semester, but more is definitely recommended. Counselors can ensure you are taking proper classes that meet your educational goals. Students are highly encouraged to meet with a counselor to create a Student Education Plan early in their Ohlone academic career.
How Do I Clear Prerequisites?
Students will need to speak with a counselor to clear any prerequisites.
First year students must first complete the Self-Guided Placement module on WebAdvisor before any prerequisites are cleared. Counselors will review both Self-Guided Placement Summary and transcripts.

Students with AP scores that wish to use these scores to clear prerequisites must submit AP scores. Prerequisites will not be cleared until AP scores are submitted.
Students with transcripts from other colleges or universities, please speak with a counselor to review and have prerequisites cleared.
Am I blocked from registering for classes if I do not attend a Counseling and Registration (CAR) appointment?
No. Students can still register for courses without attending a CAR session. However, it is recommended that all new students attend a CAR session to receive important information, meet with a counselor, and complete an initial, personalized student education plan (initial SEP). This plan will guide you in what courses you should enroll in for your first semester at Ohlone College. Your 'Registration Readiness Dashboard' on Web Advisor may indicate a need to attend a CAR session, however you can still register for your courses*.
*Please note: if a course has a prerequisite, you will need to meet with a counselor if you meet minimum qualifications in order to register for that course.
NEW STUDENTS: you must take the self-guided placement module before you can register for your math and English courses (or courses that require math or English as a prerequisite). Please allow 24 business hours to process your placement results before you register for a math and/or an English course.
