Dear Ohlone College student:

We are sorry to see you on this particular webpage, but please do not worry; we are here to help you!

For assistance that best matches your individual and unique situation, please read through everything carefully.

We acknowledge there are students who gain a probation status due to circumstances beyond their control. If this is the case for you, please inquire with your professor about an incomplete (I) grade for last semester. If your grades ultimately change from incomplete to passing, then we can remove the probation status from your permanent record. Until then it will be most expedient to complete the workshop process in order to register for classes.

Or, you may have reason to petition some of your grades and replace them with excused withdraw (EW) marks. See any counselor on drop in to determine options. Submitting relevant documentation with your petition will be helpful.

Regardless of your reasons for being on probation, there are excellent tips and strategies in the student success workshops that will serve any student. We welcome you to review as many as you wish!

The Ohlone College probation process has one purpose, and that is to work with you to gain clear academic standing again, and as fast as possible! With careful planning, that could be as early as next semester.

In no way is the process meant to punish you, although it may seem that way since we will require some work from you in order to register for classes. Basically, our goal is to flag struggling students and help them with whatever obstacles they are experiencing. So let's do this!

Tip #1: Read and follow instructions carefully.

  • If you are on probation for the first time, please complete the “Why Am I On Probation?” workshop online or via zoom sign-ups
(if you have a second semester of probation status and now owe 2 workshops, you may still complete this one first).

  • If it is not your first semester on probation, you must complete a Student Success workshop, located in your Canvas account courses.

  • If you have any questions, please email Lenore Ferguson at academicstanding@ohlone.edu.

Status 1: Probation

A student has attempted 12 or more units and has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0, or has 50% or more of their total attempted units made up of "W", "I", and/or "NP" grades.

  • Student is blocked from registering for the next semester.
  • Workshop - Student on probation for the first time must attend the "Why Am I On Probation?" Workshop. You may complete this workshop only ONE time.
    • Subsequent semesters of probationary status require completion of a Student Success Workshop, which includes an advising session with a counselor. These may be completed in your Canvas account or in a  Zoom workshop. If you are a returning student, please sign up for access here.  Continuing students will find the workshops are already in Canvas classes.

Status 2: Subject to Dismissal

For two consecutive semesters a student's cumulative GPA is below 1.75 and/or 50% or more of their total attempted units are made up of “W”, “I”, and/or “NP” grades.

  • Student is blocked from registering for the next semester.
  • Workshop - Student must complete a Student Success Workshop, which includes an advising session with a counselor. These may be completed in your Canvas account or in a Zoom workshop. If you are a returning student, please sign up for access here.  Continuing students will find the workshops are already in Canvas courses.

Status 3: Dismissal

For three consecutive semesters a student's cumulative GPA is below 1.75 and/or 50% or more total attempted units are made up of "W", "I", and/or "NP" grades.

  • Student is blocked from registering for the next semester.
  • Reinstatement by Appointment - Student needs to see a counselor and petition for reinstatement. A student will need to repeat this process each semester they remain on Dismissal status.
  • To be re-admitted for next semester you must complete each of the following steps:

Students on Academic Dismissal status will remain on Dismissal until their overall GPA is above 1.75. Students on Progress Dismissal status will remain on Dismissal until their “W”, “I”, and “NP” grades do not exceed 50% of their total attempted units. Students who have been reinstated need to repeat the reinstatement process for Dismissal status each semester. If a student fails to meet the conditions outlined in their reinstatement contract, they may not be approved for a future reinstatement contract.

Please note: Students who are on probationary status for two (2) consecutive semesters do not qualify for a continuing student registration appointment. This means if this is your second consecutive semester of Probation, or if you remain on probation next semester, you will register on a later date, with New and Returning students.

Appeals for registration priority and financial aid need to be directed to the Admissions and Records office in person or via email at admissions@ohlone.edu.
