Glass Reinforced Concrete

Glass fiber reinforced concrete ( GFRC ) also called GRC or FRC is a cementitious, composite material, cast in thin shell shapes for use in construction. GFRC is composed of concrete that is reinforced with glass fibers to produce a thin, lightweight, yet strong material. The material offers several benefits to both architects and designers.

GFRC Benefits

  • Superior fire retardant properties
  • Offered in a variety of shapes similar to what terra cotta, carved stone or precast concrete offers, but at a much reduced weight
  • Is lightweight
  • Can replicate terra cotta, granite, limestone, cast stone or other hard to use materials

Blue-Jean Insulation

The Newark Center is using UltraTouch Blue Jean insulation. UltraTouch is made from high quality natural fibers. These fibers contain inherent qualities that provide for extremely effective sound absorption and maximum thermal performance. UltraTouch DOES NOT ITCH and is very easy to handle. UltraTouch contains no chemical irritants and requires no warning labels compared to other traditional products. There are no VOC concerns when using UltraTouch, as it is safe for you and the environment. Recycled denim jeans are used to insulate the environmentally friendly campus. Cotton insulation from these pre-consumer recycled jeans eliminates asbestos and formaldehyde, reducing irritation to the skin, nose and throat. Various low odor and low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Kelly Moore paints were used to add color throughout the Newark Center. All paints exceeded the standards for VOC emissions set forth by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Visit the EPA website for additional information on VOCs.

Think Chair

Think chair.

In developing the Think Chair, Steelcase considered where it came from, how it is made, and what it will be when it's no longer a chair.

To create the Think Chair, Steelcase worked with McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), selecting only materials considered safe to the environment. The Think Chair, certified at the Gold level, is the first product to ever receive Cradle to Cradle™ Product Certification from MBDC. The Cradle to Cradle™ Product Certification evaluates a product for human and environmental health impacts throughout its lifecycle and its potential for being truly recycled or safely composted. Certification of a finished product also requires the evaluation of energy-use quantity and quality (i.e., relative proportion of renewable energy), water-use quantity, water-effluent quality, and workplace ethics associated with manufacturing.

Steelcase Think Chair collaboration with MBDC.

At the same time, the Institute for Product Development in Denmark conducted a complete Life Cycle Assessment evaluating the chair's lifelong impact on the environment - from materials extraction through production, shipping, use, and end of life.

The results of the Life Cycle Assessment are reported in the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) , created per ISO 14025. The EPD shows the Think Chair's impact on environmental factors like global warming, smog, resource depletion, and waste.

A few more environmental facts about the Think Chair:

  • up to 98% recyclable by weight
  • disassembly for recycling takes about five minutes using common hand tools (hammer, screwdriver, etc.) (disassembly instructions (PDF) )
  • up to 37% recycled content
  • holds the NF Environnement Label in France for environmental quality
  • has SCS Indoor Advantage Gold certification for indoor air quality. This certification helps the Think Chair contribute toward earning a LEED point for low emitting furniture.

Akira Tables

Akira table.

Top Cores: Akira tables are constructed using core stock. This material is manufactured from waste material left over in wood processing. 100% recyclable.

Top Surface: Are available with either high pressure laminate tops or hardwood vener tops. All hardwood veneer used in Vecta products are carefully harvested from sustained-yielded forests. Veneer tops are finished with a catalyzed varnish. 100% recyclable. For more information on laminate visit our vendors websites at: and Surface materials bonded to the cores use a water-based PVA adhesive that contains no solvents or ozone-depleting substances.

Edge: Akira edges are ABS edge-band, PVC vinyl, or solid hardwood. ABS and hardwood are 100% recyclable.

Base: Bases are constructed using extruded aluminum and are powder coated for durability. In the powder coating process ecologically relevant residual matter is filtered out in a closed water circulation system. Spent powder is reclaimed for painting of sand castings. 100% recyclable.

Akira tables are 96% recyclable. As a part of the Steelcase production process, they recycle the following: vendor packaging, scrap, and unused steel. Approximate disassembly time 30 minutes.
