One of the most successful and consistent basketball programs in the California Community College Athletic Association is located in the Bay Area of Northern California, Ohlone College. The Renegades have won five Coast Conference Championships since 2003 and boast a winning percentage of over 70% while their players regularly graduate and move on to NCAA (Division I & II) programs to continue their playing careers.

Many times, through those successful seasons, their roster has included international players. This year, the 10-4 Renegades feature nine (9) guys other countries(pictured below): Australia (3), Sweden (2), Norway (2), China (1), and South Sudan (1).

Now let's be honest here, their Head Coach is a guy named John "JP" Peterson and he's a friend of mine so it should come as no surprise that he likes the international game. We've coached together a bit and besides being a very good basketball coach he's also a good guy. He's a straight shooter, honest and demanding of his kids but he works hard and builds a team around his philosophy while he and his staff also develop players, which is really important at the JC level.

It's also important to note that while Ohlone has some good international players on their roster, they also feature some really good kids from California. In fact, Chris Read is a 6'4 SG from Castro Valley, CA who does a little bit of everything for the Renegades and frankly, he's better than a lot of guys I've scouted on D1 rosters at the moment. He's long, athletic, a very good defender and rebounder from the guard spot, can slash to the goal and is very effective shooting off the bounce.

Coach JP spent several seasons as the lead Assistant to his friend and mentor, Mike Dunlap (Head Coach of the NBA Charlotte Bobcats) while the two were at Metro State in Denver, Colorado. His teams are known for their full-court pressure creating transition opportunities, match-up zone, unselfish half-court offense, and playing hard! This particular group really seems to enjoy playing together and it is always for the name on the front of the jersey.

I had the great pleasure to watch Ohlone play last Saturday night with another friend of NetScouts Basketball who was visiting from Norway, FIBA Coach, Baard Stoller. Baard is one of the top coaches in Norway having coached both the Men's and Women's Senior National Teams as well as the Asker Aliens and now the BK Miners in the Norwegian pro leagues. Not only has Coach Stoller won several championships but he's assisted several young men & women in coming to play college ball in the United States. He's over here now visiting all of his kids and watching them play.

Fredrik Boehn and Henry McCarthy are his pupils currently playing very well for JP and showing great improvement over just 14 games in the states. Boehn is a 6'6 shooter with good range and nice footwork while McCarthy is an active 6'9 Power Forward who runs well, catches the ball and can finish with either hand. Both guys have good hand-skills (dribble, pass, & shooting technique) thanks in part to Stoller and his coaching and are good prospects who will get looks from D1 programs.

I'm sure the Renegades will make another run at the Coast Conference Championship and are well on their way to a 20 win season but regardless, they'll play hard, play together, play smart, and have fun along the way.
