Match Report: West Hills hits Ohlone early and holds
- Game Day: Tuesday, August 30, 2011
- Ohlone of Coast South Division, Non-Conference Match
- West Hills @ Ohlone
- West Hills 4, Ohlone 1
Ohlone opened its first home game of the season with a sobering loss to West Hills of Lemoore. The Renegades faced a strong opponent after facing Shasta at the north four days earlier in a 0-0 draw in the 100 plus temperature in Shasta. That game was costly as Ohlone's new center back, Taylor Leidheist, was lost in the opening moments and perhaps for the season in a collision resulting in a severe knee injury.
The Renegades opened today's match with confidence, yet cautious, as West Hills has bested Ohlone in each of its last two outings. West Hills pushed on the Ohlone side early, hitting the cross bar at minute two. But a confident back let by Raul Chavez and Greivin Pacheo Quesada (both freshmen) looked to hold their line.
The Renegades also were set to push in the early back and forth as both teams battled for control. Jonathan Santillan and Luis Chavez both anchored a solid midfield that found opportunities from afar. The Ohlone side actually outshot the visiting side with sixteen total shots, hitting six on frame. The odds, however, did not play in their favor.
The quality side of West Hills only needed six solid shots to finish four. The Lemoore side were fortunate in scoring midway in the first half off a well placed corner kick the slide off the Renegades back side on the near post.
Despite the goal, Ohlone were positive going forward and the adjusted their shape to put more attackers up front and put the pressure on the visiting side. Ohone had two opening shots by Quesada in the first half that needed a little inch or two to go in. Lemoore had even less margin when a second half shot tickled the inside of the post but went away from the goal to the relief of the home side. A one to nil first half saw Ohlone put pressure on the West Hills side with consistent attacks, a bit unfamiliarly from the past two seasons.
A small break down in the second half, on the outside back allowed the WH side in for their second after a lull in their presence on the field. This sparked new life in West Hills, a flurry of efforts were however, quashed by keeper Cesar Olivas (freshman). Throwing caution to the win, Ohlone did a full press, mid way in half two, that put them in the West Hill side but opened the Renegades to the counter attack. The effort, however, earned Ohlone its first goal of the season on a penalty kicked expertly placed by Dominic Hertz, following a take down of Quesada in the box.
"We are reworking our back line now without our starting center back." said Coach Nordmo. "The season is young. Our squad it the best we have seen in three years here at Ohlone. We had a decent result in our first game, and came home to be tested against a solid side. The score is not as we would like it, but we take away a snap shot of a solid attacking team. We will need to tighten our defense, but we are encouraged and expect to be more dangerous this year."
In the Shasta game, Ohlone outshot its opponent 19 to 9. "Our stats looked good right now, we just need to start filling in the blanks on the goals" quipped Nordmo.
