The Ohlone women's volleyball team walked into the gym at Cañada College on Wednesday night excited to play their first league game of the season. After working hard all spring, they were anxious to get on the court.
With five returning players and five new recruits, the team has a healthy mixture of stability and young talent. The incoming freshmen include Outside Hitter/Opposite Jackie Class, Opposite /Setter Emily Marden, Outside Hitter Brittany Creel, Defensive Specialist Marcela Chinn and Defensive Specialist Taylor Presley. These girls are an excellent addition to the Renegades volleyball team and will prove to be a substantial factor in this seasons success.
The game on Wednesday got off to a rough start, jitters were being passed around the court, and the girls just couldn't seem to get into a rhythm, but after a 25-19 win in the first game, the players started to loosen up. They came out and won the second game 25-16. The girls got better and better as the match went on, keeping the Colts under 15 in the third game and winning 25-12.
Jennifer Covey, the starting Outside Hitter ended the match with an impressive 16 kills, Outside Hitter Jackie Class had 4 aces and 21 digs and the Libero, Lindsey Calabrese had 18 digs. Elise Menicou proved to be a force at the net with 4 out of the 5 total blocks for the match.
With new players, new personalities and new competition, the first game always comes with kinks that need to be ironed out, but by the end of the match the lady Renegades really came together as a team and showed what they were capable of. This season looks to be very promising and it will be exciting to see what these girls will accomplish.
