(Includes Statements of Technical Standards.)
- Each person considering the Respiratory Therapist major, or accepting a place in the Respiratory Therapist Program at Ohlone College should have the following physical capabilities:
- ability to stand and walk for up to 90% of the work day
- ability to bend and kneel in order to perform CPR
- ability to climb stairs when necessary
- ability to lift up to 45 pounds and carry up to 25 pounds
- ability to push or pull heavy equipment on wheels such as compressed gas cylinders and ventilators
- ability to use hands and fingers 100% of the time in order to perform: chest percussion and auscultation, assembly and disassembly of equipment manipulation of various controls on machines and to document patient care in patient records through the use of legible handwriting.
- visual ability to read charts, computer screens, and monitors and discern alarms and perform inspection of patients' physical characteristics in normal as well as in dimly lit areas. Students must be able to accurately measure and dispense medications.
- hearing ability to discern breath sounds during chest auscultation and to discern findings from audible alarms on equipment and monitors
- ability to work in confined spaces such as small hospital rooms surrounded by large pieces of equipment (ie. ventilators, hospital beds etc.)
Communication and Understanding Qualifications
- Each person considering the Respiratory Therapist major, or accepting a place in the Respiratory Therapist Program at Ohlone College should have the following oral and written communication capabilities:
- ability to communicate information and ideas while speaking so that others will understand. Students must explain procedures and provide directions to patients during procedures, and communicate appropriately with health care team members.
- ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Students must have the ability to react quickly to verbal instructions, patient needs and requests of others on the health care team.
- ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
- ability to speak and write clearly so that others can understand.
- ability to combine pieces of information to form conclusions.
